Asian Journeys explores the sociopolitical context for American collecting of Asian art in the post- World War II period with focus on the collecting practice of John D. Rockefeller 3rd (1906–1978) and his wife Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller (1909–1992). Founder of Asia Society and son of collectors John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, John D. Rockefeller 3rd played an instrumental role in fostering cultural understanding and cooperation between Asia and America. From 1963 to 1978, art historian and director of the Cleveland Museum, Sherman E. Lee (1918–2008), served as an advisor to the Rockefellers’ collection. The relationship among them, explored in this exhibition, is an extraordinary example of the connections between art collecting and U.S.-Asia relations. Curated by Adriana Proser, John H. Foster Curator of Traditional Asian Art at Asia Society, the exhibition comprises fifty-six outstanding stone, metal, and ceramic objects from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia from the collection that John D. Rockefeller 3rd and Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller donated to Asia Society. These works are complemented by a series of original photographs of earlier Rockefeller collections of Asian art by artist (and great-granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Abby Rockefeller) Mary Louise Pierson. Asian Journeys: Collecting Art in Post-war America was organized by Asia Society Museum, New York. Presentation at the McMullen Museum was designed by Diana Larsen and underwritten by Boston College with support from the Patrons of the McMullen Museum.

"The Sufi Influence of Chinese Muslim Thought," by William Chittick, and "The Neo-Confucian Sympathies of Chinese Muslims," by Sachiko Murata.
Drs. Sachiko Murata and William C. Chittick are professors of religious studies at Stony Brook University. Dr. Murata’s early work on the parallels between Islamic and Far Eastern cosmology and psychology, published as The Tao of Islam: A Sourcebook on Gender Relationship in Islamic Thought (1992), led to her more recent investigations of Muslim thinking in the Chinese language. Dr. Chittick has written and translated numerous books on major representatives of the Sufi tradition, such as Rumi and Ibn Arabi, and has highlighted Sufism’s common ground with Islamic philosophy, as in Science of the Cosmos, Science of the Soul: The Pertinence of Islamic Cosmology in the Modern World (2007).

Professor Benson Farb (University of Chicago) will speak on "Topology, dynamics and geometry of surfaces (and their remarkable relationships)" Abstract: Surfaces can be considered from many different angles: their shape (i.e. topological structure), their geometry (e.g. curvature), and the behavior of fluid flows on them. In this talk I will describe three beautiful theorems, one for each of these aspects of surfaces. I will also try to explain the remarkable fact that these seemingly completely different viewpoints are intimately related. This talk will be geared towards those with some familiarity with calculus.

Professor Benson Farb, University of Chicago, will speak on "Representation theory and homological stability: some conjectures" Abstract: Homological stability is a remarkable phenomenon in the study of groups and spaces. For certain sequences G_n of groups, for example G_n=GL(n,Z), it states that the homology group H_i(G_n) does not depend on n for big enough n. There are many natural sequences G_n, from pure braid groups to congruence groups to Torelli groups, for which homological stability fails horribly. In these cases the rank of H_i(G_n) blows up to infinity, and in many (e.g. the latter two) cases almost nothing is known about H_i(G_n); indeed there may be no nice "closed form" for the answers. While doing some homology computations for the Torelli group, Tom Church and I found what looked to us like the shadow of a broad pattern. In order to explain it and formulate a specific conjecture, we came up with a notion of "stability of a sequence of representations of group G_n". We began to realize that this notion can be used to make other predictions: from group representations to Malcev Lie algebras to the homology of congruence groups. Some of these predicitions are known results, while others are not known. In this talk I will explain our broad conjectural picture via some of its many instances. No knowledge of either representation theory or group homology will be assumed. This talk is intended for a mathematically sophisticated audience.

Tryst has an excellent brunch menu and live jazz so we will go there first and then go see Our Family Wedding. Gluten Free Menu as well as brunch items. If you just want to come for brunch & Jazz that's Ok. http://www.trystrestaurant.com/?p=336 "Our marriage, their wedding." It's lesson number one for any newly engaged couple, and Lucia (America Ferrera) and Marcus (Lance Gross) are no exception. In Fox Searchlight Pictures' OUR FAMILY WEDDING, they learn the hard way that the path to saying "I do" can be rife with familial strife. When they return from college and too suddenly announce their marriage plans, they soon discover that their fathers - two highly competitive over-the-top egos - can wreak a major amount of havoc on their special day. With insults flying and tempers running high, it's anyone's guess if the alpha dads (Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia) will survive to make it down the aisle in one piece. Lucia's mother (Diana Maria Riva) is busy planning the wedding of "her" dreams and the only levelheaded one in the bunch is Angela (Regina King), the groom's father's best friend and lawyer, who manages to keep her cool when the madness reaches a crescendo.
